COVID has changed the way of life and way of business to “new normal” across the world. As the lockdown phase kept extending, deliverables and services that were essential for business, needed to be kept functional.  Most of them needed immediate attention to re-align basic infrastructure and resources to continue providing support to businesses, as remote operations and work from home became essential. There are several challenges in providing basic infrastructure to employees working from home by extending connectivity, arranging IT assets and moreover careful handling of the cultural shifts of an individual’s mind to work from home. Many business functions needed clearance from customers and internal. All these would be quite challenging tasks to set up parallel functions while working from home setup.

Until recently agile workspace was the latest trend and had gained phenomenal importance and almost all segments of the business were moving towards it from the standard workspace solution. The agile concept gave collaborative and most interactive ways of working that probably got momentum as an efficient work method. At the peak of this COVID situation changed all these trends and set new norms considering the social distancing and work in isolation as needed.

Within the standard workspace design, most of the organisations had to adjust and re-align/assign spaces in compliance with COVID norms.  Without investing in infrastructure and its modifications, seat occupancy got reduced with alternate seat usage. Many organisations have started implementing hot seat concepts that will allow an employee to get his seat allocated well in advance through’ a simple application tool. This will provide flexible working time thus making effective utilisation of space.

Technological innovations that are happening in digital space in conducting virtual meetings and webinars are not quick fix any more until new normal is set in.  The trend of work home continues to be an option but not a compulsion in the future sphere. Many of the individuals would prefer to work from an office set up, which is more effective and practical for their roles.

While work from home continues, dependency on robust and reliable network connectivity will be the thrust area. There will be an increase in demand for data storage space and network hosting requirements. Security and safety requirements for such ways of working will get a newer thought. Establishing security borders for customer-specific information and data is very important while extending work from home options.
The business continuity plan that the present industry has established after various learnings and business focus within the imagined boundary will set new expectations. New geographical locations will get importance as an alternate workspace.

As it appears newer office space requirements will be muted for a while until the business requirements are reassessed. Work from home trends will reduce the operational and administrative costs to a company such as facility management costs, power bills, maintenance expenses, etc.
