The health benefits of biophilic design: Healing spaces for mind, body and spirit

Bridging nature and built environments for mind, body, and spirit wellness

In today’s fast-paced world, where the hustle and bustle of urban life often disconnect us from the natural world, biophilic design has emerged as a powerful antidote. Biophilic design, rooted in connecting humans with nature, has gained recognition for its ability to create healing environments that promote well-being for the mind, body, and spirit. From workplace designs aimed at enhancing employee well-being to retail spaces designed to elevate the customer experience, as architects, we know that biophilic design offers a holistic approach to creating spaces that nurture and rejuvenate.

At its core, biophilic design seeks to integrate natural elements and patterns into the built environment, fostering a sense of connection to the natural world. This approach has been shown to have numerous health benefits, including stress reduction, improved cognitive function, and enhanced emotional well-being. By incorporating elements such as natural light, indoor plants, and views of nature, biophilic design creates environments that resonate with our innate human need to be surrounded by nature.

In the realm of workspace design, biophilic principles have become increasingly important as employers recognise the impact of the work environment on employee productivity and satisfaction. We have embraced biophilic design as a cornerstone of our approach to workspace design for our clients and their offices. By prioritising elements such as access to natural light, greenery, and natural materials, built environment organisations are now aware of the need to create workspaces that promote employee well-being and creativity.

For instance, in the recent project for designing our own workspace, we had a mission of transforming a conventional office environment into a vibrant and nature-inspired workplace. Our love for local artisans, nature, and simplicity spurred us to embark on a journey that, along the way, gave us a clearer understanding of our institutional values. Drawing upon the simplicity and irregularities of the natural world, our new workspace is designed in tandem with the surroundings, cultivating a deep understanding and celebration of our uniqueness. Large windows were installed to maximise daylight, emphasising the importance of simplicity in local, natural materials like stone, brick, terracotta, concrete panels, and a thatched roof. Paired with lush greenery, these elements cultivate a serene work environment, offering respite from urban chaos. The result is a workspace that looks visually appealing and supports the employees’ overall well-being and productivity.

In retail settings, on the other hand, it can lead to increased customer engagement and sales. We have leveraged biophilic principles to create spaces that enhance the customer experience by incorporating elements such as biophilic lighting, natural materials, greenery, and retail environments that promote a sense of calm and well-being. For example, in a project for a salon in Bangalore, the site was nestled amidst an urban landscape with an extensive backyard inspired by a design that respected the existing structure. The spatial arrangement, utility, and conviviality manifested themselves as the design inspiration while using the core value of biophilia. To effectively utilise the backyard, the facility was segregated into two portions—one enclosed within the old structure and the other, an extended semi-open glazed roofing with the backyard. Despite such an open layout, the areas, such as the pedicure section, the skin rooms, etc., have been seamlessly installed with comfort and a sense of privacy. Traditional design methods were employed to create a harmonious fusion of the old and the new, giving rise to a renewed salon amidst lush greenery.

This design form offers a robust framework for creating healing spaces that nourish the mind, body, and spirit. By integrating natural elements and patterns into workspace and retail designs, biophilic design fosters a sense of connection to the natural world, promoting health and well-being for all who inhabit these spaces. Through thoughtful design and attention to such principles, we can navigate positive paths that prioritise the well-being of employees and customers alike, creating spaces that inspire and rejuvenate.
