Balancing design and entrepreneurship: An insightful conversation with Alhad Gore, Managing Partner, Beyond Design Architects & Consultants

Navigating the journey from architect to managing partner at Beyond Design Architects & Consultants

Can you share a brief glimpse into your career journey? What has been the most pivotal moment in your career, and how has it shaped your professional growth?

I graduated as an architect from academia architecture in 1993. Almost immediately after graduating in 1993, I started my own practice way back in 1994. That was the time when there was no commercial Office  segment present and all that we used to do was small little residences and shops. However after working for almost 5 years and giving my blood and sweat to the projects, I realised that my practice was not commercially getting successful.

Although I did a lot of projects, I understood that it’s not only important to be a good designer but it’s probably equally or more important to be good entrepreneur.  One who knows the “ non-design ” aspects in the profession, maintain the legalities involved, the accountants, the finance, HR and the admin Side of entrepreneurship, which unfortunately nobody teaches you while you are in college.

Ultimately at the end of 1999, I had to stop my practice and take up a job for living. From 1999 till 2009, I worked in three firms, taking up multiple challenges, Learning along the way and making sure that I gain knowledge in both technical as well as non-technical Fields. In 2009 I got the confidence that now if I start again, I will be able to sustain my practice. I started Beyond Design 2009 along with two other partners and slowly and steadily we have kept growing since then, doing multi-million Square feet projects and spreading our wings pan India in terms of Office and project locations.

Looking back, I feel the failure in 1999 was the most pivotal moment in my career which shaped the future.

What are some of the significant challenges you’ve encountered in the industry, and what are the measures we can adopt to address them?

There are many challenges in the industry. Some of the most common of them are malpractices,  non clarity thoughts, wrong commitments by vendors etc. However, I strongly believe that all of these challenges can be overcome by working honestly and by adhering to processes which will smoothen all the issues that normally crop up in a project.

How have you integrated sustainability and eco-friendly practices into your design strategies?
Sustainability for us is not a tick mark in the project, but a process that is mandatory to be followed. In fact, we ourselves have got registered with SBTI ( Science based technology initiative ) where we have declared a goal for carbon reduction for ourselves as “ Beyond Design “. I think this should be example enough for our commitment sustainability.

What innovative technologies or processes have you implemented to enhance operational efficiency and user experience within your designs ?
I am extremely happy to stay that we are absolutely at the forefront of technology. We use extensive technology implementation not just on-site during execution, but also in the design face and post occupancy face for the clients. We work in BIM, VR and AR giving a comprehensive design experience over the competition to make sure that it helps the projects and clients to be ahead of the curve

In your opinion, what are the essential qualities and skills that have contributed to your success in design, and what advice would you give to aspiring professionals in this field?

Our profession is completely human centric. One can’t take out the human aspect in design and its implication on the society. Also it is not something that you can create being in silo. It is a teamwork and hence looking after your team is one of the most important aspects in the profession. A happy team only means a happy client. Being a good human being is the most fundamental Quality that a designer should possess for his success in the profession. Hard work, humility and honesty can then strengthen the success of your practice.
