Interview with Punit Tambi of Millimetre on innovation in surface solutions for interior and furniture design

Leading the way in interior and furniture design innovations

How do you and your team at Millimetre stay ahead of industry trends and continuously innovate in surface solutions for interior and furniture design?
At Millimetre, staying ahead of industry trends and continuously innovating in surface solutions for interior and furniture design is a core part of our mission. Our research and development team constantly explores new materials, technologies, and design trends, ensuring our products boast superior characteristics like scratch resistance, moisture resistance, antibacterial properties, durability, and aesthetic appeal.

We understand customers’ challenges in finding coordinated materials, so we offer perfectly matched decorative laminates and edge bands in a seamless, convenient package. By actively gathering feedback from designers and consumers, we tailor our offerings to meet their needs and anticipate future demands. This customer-centric approach allows us to solve the hassle of piecing together mismatched materials, making the design process more accessible and stress-free.

Our strong industry relationships and participation in global design forums provide valuable insights, keeping us at the forefront of developments. We embrace agility, fearless creativity, and a commitment to sustainability, ensuring our innovations are cutting-edge and environmentally responsible. Through these efforts, Millimetre continues to lead the industry with innovative, high-quality surface solutions that redefine interior and furniture design standards.

Can you share the initial challenges you faced while establishing Millimetre and how you overcame them to achieve success in a competitive market?
Entering the laminate market came with its own set of challenges. The market is highly competitive and saturated, leaving little room for product innovation. Additionally, gaining consumer trust was difficult due to long-standing competitors who had built relationships over years and decades. To penetrate the market with a differentiating factor, we at Millimetre put consumer needs first and innovated by addressing specific customer challenges rather than simply launching a large inventory of patterns and textures. Building brand recognition and trust in the design and decor industry requires focusing on innovation and developing unique solutions, such as our Band.Edge solution. We utilised branding and digital marketing as tools for brand distinction and visibility. Building relationships with distributors at the ground level, we leveraged our innovative products to gain their trust. By providing global-standard products at a compelling value, we ensured our offerings appealed to key stakeholders. Constant innovation remains our cornerstone, continually bringing new solutions to stay ahead of the competition. Millimetre overcame initial challenges through these strategies and succeeded in a competitive market.

How do you foster a culture of creativity and teamwork within Millimetre to ensure that out-of-the-box thinking is consistently encouraged and implemented?
At Millimetre, fostering a culture of creativity and teamwork is central to our success. We encourage out-of-the-box thinking by creating an open environment where every team member’s ideas are valued and explored. Regular brainstorming sessions and cross-functional team collaborations ensure diverse perspectives are considered, leading to innovative solutions.

We invest in continuous learning and development, providing our team with opportunities to attend workshops, conferences, and training sessions. Our leadership promotes a supportive atmosphere where experimentation is encouraged, and failure is seen as a learning opportunity rather than a setback. By fostering open communication, promoting continuous learning, and celebrating innovation, we ensure that creativity and teamwork remain at the forefront of our operations, driving our company forward.

What do you believe are the biggest challenges currently facing the AEC interior design and decor industry, and how does the firm address these issues?
One of the biggest challenges in the AEC interior design and decor industry is the demand for superior-quality, coordinated surface solutions that seamlessly integrate into diverse design schemes. At Millimetre, we address this challenge by pioneering Collezione Deci.mmal, India’s first comprehensive range of surface solutions for modern cabinetry and carcasses. This collection includes high-definition decor laminates, perfectly matching band edges (Band.Edge), and high-density laminated compact sheets (Hi.LAMMâ„¢), available in suede, leather, wood, and textile finishes. Our products meet and exceed international standards, offering designers quick and easy solutions for achieving flawless aesthetics. Moreover, we are committed to empowering the next generation through educational initiatives, ensuring a skilled workforce capable of driving innovation and excellence in the industry. Through these efforts, Millimetre not only sets benchmarks in design but also contributes to a more inclusive and sustainable future for all stakeholders.

How does Millimetre ensure that its products meet international quality standards, and what steps do you take to maintain and elevate these standards?
We ensure our products meet rigorous international quality standards through a comprehensive approach encompassing stringent quality control measures and continuous improvement initiatives. Our procurement processes are meticulously monitored at every stage to ensure consistency and adherence to specifications. Quality inspections are conducted rigorously, utilising advanced testing equipment and protocols to validate durability, performance, and safety criteria.

We invest in ongoing research and development to maintain and elevate these standards. This includes exploring new materials, refining manufacturing techniques, and integrating cutting-edge technologies that enhance product reliability and innovation. Regular audits and certifications from accredited bodies further validate our commitment to quality assurance. Through these efforts, we meet and set benchmarks for excellence in the industry, ensuring our products consistently deliver on quality, durability, and performance across international markets.

Can you elaborate on your mantra of Contribution and provide examples of how this approach has tangibly benefited Millimetre and its clients?
At Millimetre, my mantra of Contribution is integral to our business philosophy. It guides us in addressing industry challenges and delivering tangible benefits to our clients. We understand the complexities designers and architects face in sourcing reliable materials and achieving consistent quality while meeting diverse design requirements. Through our commitment to quality and innovation, we have streamlined our processes to offer comprehensive solutions that alleviate these pain points. For example, our rigorous testing and certification processes ensure that clients receive products that exceed industry standards, instilling confidence in their projects’ durability and aesthetic appeal. By prioritising flexibility and customisation, we empower designers to seamlessly integrate our edge bands with laminates, effortlessly enhancing design cohesion.

Furthermore, our proactive approach to integrating customer feedback into our development cycles enables us to stay responsive to evolving market needs. This customer-centric strategy enhances client satisfaction and strengthens our brand’s reputation for reliability and innovation in the industry. Ultimately, our dedication to Contribution drives us to set new benchmarks and foster enduring partnerships based on trust and mutual success.

What strategies has Millimetre employed to position itself as a benchmark for quality and excellence within the industry, and how do you maintain this status?

Our commitment to understanding and addressing customer pain points has guided the development of products that meet and exceed global standards, catering to dynamic preferences shaped by digitisation and globalisation trends.

We maintain our leadership status by adhering to rigorous standards for abrasion resistance, easy maintenance, and environmental sustainability in our laminates and edge bands. Additionally, our visual branding aligns closely with our ethos of delivering superior product quality and customer satisfaction. By consistently introducing innovations and product enhancements, we foster customer loyalty and sustain our position as a leader in the surface solutions market.

How does Millimetre integrate sustainable practices into its production processes and product offerings, and what are your long-term sustainability goals?
Sustainability is at the core of our business ethos. We integrate sustainable practices throughout our production processes and product offerings to minimise environmental impact while meeting high-quality standards. Our facilities prioritise resource efficiency and waste reduction, utilising advanced technologies to optimise energy consumption and reduce our carbon footprint. Furthermore, our products are designed for durability, reducing the need for frequent replacements and promoting long-term use.

Laminates are a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to solid-wood furniture, eliminating the need for wood in furniture design. This not only conserves natural resources but also offers a versatile and durable solution for interior design. We prioritise eco-friendly materials and manufacturing techniques that meet stringent environmental standards and certifications. Our leather laminates are vegan-friendly, aligning with sustainable practices and catering to the growing demand for ethical and eco-conscious products.

Looking ahead, our long-term sustainability goals include further reducing our carbon footprint, expanding our use of recycled materials, and enhancing transparency across our supply chain. We are committed to continuously improving sustainability practices and contributing positively to the environment while delivering innovative and high-quality solutions to our customers.

With over two decades of experience, what continues to drive your passion for the industry, and how do you keep your entrepreneurial spirit alive?
My journey has been driven by a relentless pursuit of innovation and out-of-the-box thinking, transforming what was once mundane into compelling design solutions. From a young age, I immersed myself in business, cultivating entrepreneurial skills and a deep understanding of wholesale and retail distribution. At Millimetre, we’re not just about products but about setting new quality and design excellence standards across India. My mantra of contribution guides our approach, focusing on addressing critical industry needs with solution-oriented strategies.

Beyond leadership, my commitment extends to empowering the AEC interior design sector through sustainable growth and elevating industry benchmarks. Today, Millimetre stands as a testament to these values, inspiring others to elevate their products and services to meet the highest standards of quality and innovation.

Furthermore, our CSR activities are a significant source of motivation for me. Millimetre strives to enhance its positive impact not only within the design fraternity but also beyond it. To this end, the company is committed to empowering and educating underprivileged students, nurturing them into skilled, informed, and spirited innovative thinkers of tomorrow. Helping the marginalised motivates me to continue my work and support those less fortunate in achieving brighter futures. Through these efforts, Millimetre aspires to create a brighter and more inclusive future for all.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for Millimetre in the next five years, and what new innovations can we expect from your team?
