Amoeba Office: Contemporary workspace design by Hiren Patel Architects – Redefining office design trends

A seamless fusion of nature, functionality, and sustainability in Surat’s dynamic landscape

Surat, a vibrant hub of commerce and culture in Gujarat, has long been celebrated for its textile prowess and diamond trade. Yet, it is also a city that seamlessly blends its deep-rooted traditions with a spirit of modern innovation. Amid this dynamic urban canvas, Amoeba, an office project by Hiren Patel Architects, emerges as a groundbreaking exploration of contemporary design that harmonizes architecture with nature.

Spanning over 8,000 square feet, Amoeba is more than just an office—it’s a bold reimagination of what a workspace can aspire to be. Its organic, flowing design sets it apart from the rigid structures that dominate corporate architecture, creating a space that feels as alive and adaptive as its name suggests.

A Living, Breathing Workspace

True to its namesake, Amoeba embodies fluidity and adaptability. Inspired by the natural forms of the organism, the design features four glass cubes—a directors’ suite, a meeting room, a staff area, and a central veranda. This spatial arrangement fosters a sense of openness, with indoor spaces effortlessly merging into semi-open outdoor areas.

The veranda, reminiscent of the welcoming spaces in traditional Indian homes, serves as a communal hub. Here, employees can gather, share ideas, and connect informally, blending work with moments of creative inspiration. The seamless transition between the interior and exterior is not just a design choice but a philosophy—one that views the office as an ecosystem for collaboration and innovation.

Transparency and Connection to Nature

At the heart of Amoeba’s architecture is a commitment to transparency, both literal and symbolic. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls flood the interiors with natural light, creating a connection to the surrounding gardens. This openness mirrors the ethos of modern workplaces—valuing inclusivity, visibility, and clarity in both design and culture.

The lush greenery surrounding the office is no mere backdrop; it is an integral part of the experience. Native plant species dominate the landscape, supporting local flora and fauna while creating a serene environment for employees. Large cantilevered roofs provide shade from Surat’s intense sun, casting dappled patterns of light and shadow that evolve throughout the day, infusing the space with dynamic energy.

A Model of Sustainable Design

Amoeba’s beauty is matched by its commitment to sustainability. Natural daylight reduces reliance on artificial lighting, while thoughtful cross-ventilation minimizes the need for air conditioning. Local materials, such as exposed concrete and handcrafted black-tiled flooring, lower the project’s carbon footprint and support the regional economy. Custom furniture crafted by local artisans underscores the architect’s dedication to community involvement and eco-consciousness.

Even the plumbing systems are designed with conservation in mind, reflecting a holistic approach to green architecture. By engaging local carpenters and sourcing materials from nearby, the project not only reduces transportation emissions but also fosters a deeper connection between the building and its community.

Where Art Meets Functionality

Inside Amoeba, the workspace transcends utility, resembling an art gallery as much as an office. Sculptures and artworks curated by artists like Apurva Desai and Anushri Patel add vibrancy and creative energy to the interiors. Steel sculptures and vivid paintings are not merely decorative; they inspire employees, spark conversations, and elevate the office into a space that nurtures both work and imagination.

Blurring Boundaries, Nurturing the Soul

Amoeba is a masterpiece of modern office design—a space where architecture blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors, formal and informal, work and creativity. It challenges the conventions of traditional workspaces by prioritizing human connection, environmental harmony, and artistic expression.

In a city known for its resilience and innovation, Amoeba stands as a testament to what’s possible when architecture transcends functionality to become a nurturing, inspiring environment. This is not just an office—it’s the future of workspaces, designed to uplift the spirit and foster meaningful connections.
