OSA Studio’s The Green Office: An organic modernism masterpiece in Kirti Nagar

Lead Designer Daksh Goel transforms a terrace space into a office with harmonious blend of art, nature, and modern comforts

The Green Office stands as a testament to innovative and sustainable design, blending natural elements with modern comforts to create a unique and inspiring workspace. The client, an avid art collector, desired an office space that seamlessly showcases his collected artworks and includes a serene garden for client meetings and morning coffee amidst nature.

The objective was to have the art add vibrant colours while the interior design subtly complemented it. The result is a harmonious blend of art and nature, reflecting the client’s refined taste and need for a peaceful environment.

The design style of the Green Office can be described as “Organic Modernism.” This modern interpretation draws inspiration from the intricate design of a bird’s nest, blending nature and comfort to create a harmonious and inviting environment.

The concept centres around an inside-outside relationship, seamlessly integrating the gardens and green spaces with the interior. Natural materials such as rich wood veneers and smooth timber are utilised, mirroring the organic hues and textures found in nature. These elements evoke the warmth and cosiness of a bird’s nest, fostering a sense of calm and connection to the natural world.

Central to the design is the attached outdoor terrace garden, symbolizing the tree that supports and nurtures the nest. This green sanctuary provides a serene escape from the urban environment, enhancing the overall aesthetic and functionality of the office space.

The terrace garden not only serves as a visual and sensory extension of the interior but also promotes well-being and productivity for those who work within. Organic Modernism beautifully encapsulates the essence of the Green Office, where nature and modernity coexist in a seamless, tranquil, and productive workspace.

To achieve an art gallery atmosphere, a passage was designed to create a sense of journey and mystery. This passage provides walls for displaying artworks, making them an integral part of the entrance experience.

As one walks through, the space gradually reveals the entire office, culminating in a view of the outdoor garden. This spatial configuration creates an engaging narrative that enhances the client’s art collection.

The main cabin, strategically positioned, opens up on both sides. On one end, it offers a view of the workspace, fostering a sense of connection and transparency. On the other side, a circular window frames a picturesque view of the garden, blending the interior with the exterior and reinforcing the inside-outside relationship central to the design.

This spatial configuration was accomplished through thoughtful planning and design. By using the passage to build anticipation and then opening up to the expansive office and garden views, a dynamic and fluid experience was created. The placement of the main cabin and the use of a circular window were deliberate choices to enhance the visual and sensory connection to nature, making the office a calm and inspiring place to work.

The main challenge in achieving the project was its location on a terrace, where Delhi’s high temperatures posed a significant issue. To address this, PUFF sheets were utilized for the terrace floor roof, providing multiple layers of insulation.

This strategic choice effectively reduced indoor temperatures by 10-15 degrees Celsius, protecting the interior from the harsh sun. Furthermore, the incorporation of greenery plays a crucial role in climate control. The green spaces were designed to create a natural breeze that cools the office environment further.

The terrace garden, acting as a green sanctuary, not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the natural cooling of the space. This innovative use of materials and natural elements ensures a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, despite the challenging climate.

In conclusion, the Green Office project showcases how thoughtful design can create a perfect balance between functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. By embracing Organic Modernism, the design seamlessly integrates natural elements and modern amenities, providing a serene and inspiring workspace.

The successful implementation of climate control measures demonstrates a commitment to creating comfortable and eco-friendly environments. The Green Office is not just a workspace; it is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of art, nature, and modernity, offering a sanctuary of peace and productivity in the heart of the urban landscape.
